mrs_maupinI went out again this morning with the kids in costumes to take pictures - and this time Heimlich's costume had real buttons and buttonholes rather than safety pins. They were both pleased. We had to convince Toad it wasn't a good idea to put the dress on again to go jump on the trampoline and play in the mud outside...
All costumes made with lots of hair pulling because Margaret my regular sewing machine is getting her yearly cleaning and oiling and I had to sew ont he bacl-up, aka the Princess-on-the-Pea (or other less socially acceptable names)
Toad's fairy was made from fabrics from the stash - one poly crash taffetas curtain and a matching acetate velvet. I found navy blue sparkly shoes and ribbon to match. The wings were little demon's wings we spary-painted, and the wand was store-bought, because we have a huge carnival/halloween store nearby and I was cutting corners.
Her dress is inspired by this ensemble from the MET. I made the sleeveless bodice and the skirt, whipped them together leaving a sort of dog-leg closure. In retrospect I should probably have lined the skirt, and given it more fullness, but it does the job. The bodice closes with buttons, the skirt and jacket with - gasp ! - velcro. I want the kids to be able to put the costumes on by themselves if they want to.
She's wearing a modern tee under the dress. I'd like to find the time to make her a blouse and a bodiced petticoat to complete the outfit.
The corduroy I had ordered for Heimlich was out of stock so I settled on another. It's not the best match with the velvet but it works. I had to alter the hell out of the burda pattern - whoever graded this forgot kids have a round belly. The jacket could still be another inch longer, too (and yet I cut it one size up and made it longer in front by an inch). It's a bit wide but the boy was able to wear a sweater under it. The buttons are the only thing that came from the stash, just this morning. The Princess-on-the-Pea is a jerk for everything except buttonholes, so the jacket even has functionning buttonholes I was able to whip out in just five minutes.
The cape it entirely handsewn. Silk velvet, and a satin that ended up being STRETCH satin, alltough not labelled as such, need I say more ? It look good, moves beautifully, and no one is allowed to look at it too closely. It ties shut with a cord, either around the neck or accross the torso.
We had to other groups of trick-or-treaters -which I didn't see because I was handsewing the collar facing at that time. Lots of people in the neighborhood gave all their candy to just one group. Next year I'm considering outting a little warning in mailboxes beforehand. Our kids were last so they just had a reasonable loot. The neighbor's girl came in a with costume and we loaned her Heimoich's faux-fur-lined henrician coat from last year to keep her warm . Kids had fun, mom is happy.
The Home Geek and I are both rather down from the never-ending cold everyone around us seems to be catching. My mum is up to a month, I'm three weeks in. It's a virus, nothing to do, but it's completely draining. Today was just going out for pictures, sending the kids out to play a bit, and watching The Nightmare before Christmas. I have to drawings to finish and then I'm going to just plop onto my bed and not move until tomorrow morning.
Ok, maybe I'll read some, since Cassidy's book arrived in the mail and I have barely opened it yet.
